The first Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle begins in 1986, pairing Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty with John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle. Weinman’s figure had appeared on the half dollar in 1916; the new silver coin gives that earlier artwork a different scale and purpose. Treasury Secretary James Baker strikes a Silver Eagle at the launch ceremony on October 29.
The two faces establish the series’ visual language: Liberty moves across a landscape, while the eagle forms a formal emblem around a shield. This is the starting point for a date collection and for comparing the original reverse with the design introduced in 2021.
Look closely
Start with the shield at the center of the reverse. The eagle’s outstretched wings create a broad, balanced silhouette, unlike the angled bird on the later landing-eagle design.
